Andbox – a new esports organization in New York

Andbox is a new esports organization created to represent New York City’s social gaming scene. Andbox operates New York Excelsior (NYXL), a multimillion dollar Overwatch League franchise, and has also acquired the rights to run New York City’s Call of Duty team in Activision’s upcoming league. While NYXL is dedicated to Overwatch, Andbox will be able to create more events that serve the broader gaming community in New York City.

Andbox will hold the New York teams in professional video-game leagues centered around two separate Activision Blizzard Inc. games: Overwatch and Call of Duty. It will also bring more gaming-related events to the New York area, and build out a merchandise division starting with apparel.

Andbox was launched by Sterling.VC, an early-stage investment fund backed by Sterling Equities, the family office owned by the Wilpon and Katz families. Sterling’s assets include the Mets and Sportsnet New York, a regional sports network. Andbox is led by co-founders Rohit Gupta, Farzam Kamel and Scott Wilpon.

The founders of Andbox felt that their esports teams should have a connection with the local community. NYXL has packed multiple New York City venues for gaming events, and soon Andbox will have an official venue for the team’s home matches. Andbox will create exclusive apparel and designs for gamers in New York City, expanding on the success of NYXL’s pop-up shops.
