Apple Planning a Gaming VR Headset

Posted on: Nov 14, 2019 By Isabelle in News and trends, Product Announcements,

Apple, one of the largest tech brands in the world, will be releasing a combined VR and AR headset in 2021 or 2022. The headset is geared towards gaming, virtual meetings, and watching videos. It will also include a 3D sensor, building off of the FaceID sensor in iPhones, confirmed by Bloomberg.com.

AR will be Apple’s new hardware push, beyond the iPhone, iPad, and MacBooks. The market for augmented reality, and virtual reality is improving rapidly every year. AR has typically been a pricey, enterprise-focused market, due to technologies not being advanced enough. Even in 2016, the market was very different compared to today.

Bulky headsets from Microsoft for example, have a total price of thousands of dollars and it is generally seen as a luxury item to the mainstream. Recently, Oculus Quest released budget-friendly AR glasses for 400 USD, but with less than satisfactory sales.

It will be interesting to see what Apple has to bring to the table in the coming years, when it comes to this category of hardware. Big advancements regarding software appeal, total price, and hardware will need to be considered, in order for VR and AR to enter into the mainstream.
