In a new study conducted by Ampere Analysis, results show that China leads globally when it comes to esports viewership. A whole 26% of all of China’s internet users watch esports online at least once a month. China has a population of around 1,4 billion people, whereas an estimated 54% use the internet. This is significantly more than in western countries.
What lures esports audiences the most, according to Ampere Analysis, is high profile global tournaments such as ESL, Fifa eCup, League of Legends Worlds, and the Fortnite World Cup.
In China, the highest-watched esports event was the League of Legends Worlds 2018, with an audience of 203 million in the country. The rest of the world had 2 million.
The leading country with most esports viewerships in Europe is Denmark, where 9% of internet users view esports every month. Other top countries are Sweden, England, and France. The U.S falls behind with 6% of internet users viewing esports every month.
When it comes to demographics, the main demographic is males aged 18-24. Women have steadily risen, and in China they make up 43% of esports viewers.
