Formula One launched an esports series across China on Thursday with the promise of the top two local gamers making it all the way to the Pro Draft stage of next year’s virtual world championship. For the first time in history, racing fans and enthusiasts in China will have the opportunity to take part in this sport.

The China championship starts on August 4 in Shanghai and will feature regional qualifications and finals with the best 100 going through to a Grand Final at the end of the year. Fans will be able to participate in a warm-up qualifying event at CapitaMall LuOne in Shanghai from July 29 to August 3.

The Formula One Esports Series has proven a hit globally since launching in 2017, with reported 109,000 gamers from 156 countries entering this year’s global qualifying competition. The F1 Pro Series season, which got underway in April, also doubled its prize money to USD 500,000.
