Online racing simulation service iRacing is partnering with German automobile manufacturer Porsche for its newest event, the Porsche iRacing World Championship Series. The competition will run online over 10 racing weekends and will feature 40 participants from across the world racing in the virtual 911 GT3 Cup to win a share of the USD 100,000 prize pool. Qualification for the competition will begin in January, with more details to be released in the coming weeks.
The competition will be the biggest so far, following the recent Porsche SimRacing Trophy at the Nürburgring in September 2018, and the Porsche SimRacing Summit on December 15 and 16 in Leipzig, where 32 players competed for a share of EUR 30,000.
This partnership signifies an increase in investment in esports from Porsche and the automotive industry in general. German automaker Mercedes-Benz introduced a partnership with Chinese esports organization RNG and expanded its partnership with ESL, while British sports car maker McLaren expanded its “Shadow Project” esports tournament/recruitment event. Racing organizers Formula One and NASCAR both stepped up their esports initiatives with leagues involving their respective real-world racing teams. Even aftermarket brand Turtle Wax has increased its role in esports this year with multiple sponsorships.
