The Tokyo metropolitan government will hold its first event for esports, or competitive computer games as sports, sometime in the year from April, it was learned Monday.

The metropolitan government will include 50 million yen (approximately UDS 450,000) for related costs in its draft budget for fiscal 2019, aiming to promote the rapidly growing esports industry and support small and midsize companies in the field, metropolitan government officials said.

Due to esports increasing popularity in Japan, the Japan Esports Union (JeSU) was formed last year to provide infrastructure to support players, develop talent and sanction matches. The organization also helps bridge the gap between the Japanese government’s laws on competition and gambling and the developers and rights holders of esports titles.

Dates, venues, and other details for the Tokyo event are still to be determined.
